The Jantar-Mantar is situated in the city of New Delhi, Delhi. It is an important landmark and tourist attraction of Delhi. It was build as an observatory. Jantar-Mantar is only one of the five observatories which is situated in Delhi. The remaining four are situated at Jaipur, Varanasi, Ujjain, and Mathura. The construction of this historical building was started by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II in 1710 and completed in 1727.
The original meaning of Jantar-Mantra is Jantar for instrument and Mantra for formula. The various abstract structures within the Jantar Mantar are, in fact, instruments that were use for keeping track of celestial bodies. Nevertheless, the Jantar Mantar is not only a time-keeper of celestial bodies: it also tales a lot about the technological achievement under the Rajput kings and their endeavor to unravel the mysterious pertaining to astronomy. The whole structure is made of stone and marble with each of then having an engraved astronomical scale. It has always attracted architects, historians and scientists from all over the world.
